As a part of the general celebration of the UN’s International Literacy Year 1990, an international conference was organized in Stavanger, Norway, as a cooperative arrangement between the Center for Reading Research, Stavanger College of Education and UNESCO.
Speakers were recognized scholars from Austria, Canada, Germany, Greece, USA, USSR and the Nordic countries.
This book presents the papers given at the conference. The volume has been organized into two main sections, one concerned with historical, social and cultural perspectives on literacy and the other with psychological and biological aspects on reading disabilities.
The historical dimension of literacy might help to shift perspective from the conventional view of reading as a personal skill to reading as a cultural practice. The bio-psychological dimension concerns individually based obstacles which make reading acquisition a particularly difficult task.
