I first met Dr John Bowlby at approximately 3.00 p.m. on Monday 20th February, 1984, in the courtyard of Corpus Christi College at the University of Oxford. Although I do tend to have a good memory for dates and times, I very much doubt that I could recall the exact temporal coordinates of any other first meeting with so much precision, excepting perhaps one or two intimate family events. But the thrill of meeting the great John Bowlby proved so momentous that details of our encounter remain engraved in the storage cupboards of my long-term memory some two decades hence.

As a postgraduate student in psychology at the University of Oxford, I organized The Oxford Psycho-Analytical Forum, the first psychoanalytical body established under the aegis of the university. During the years in which the society flourished, from 1983 until 1986, many distinguished clinicians and academics accepted our invitation to speak, ranging from Dr Hanna Segal to Dr Ronald Laing. No doubt the allure of lecturing at Great Britain's most ancient university enticed many London psychoanalysts to Oxford and in view of the lack of psychologically orientated arenas in Oxford, the series of talks and conferences proved extremely successful.
